The Truth of the New Creation
Wednesday 23rd October 2024
‘So from now on, we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ this way, we no longer do so. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: He was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
We are, therefore, Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.’
2 Corinthians 5:16-20 NIV
In times of great optimism, the church has often spoken boldly about reaching the entire world with the gospel in our generation. In moments of crisis, some have seen history as a darkening path, awaiting God’s intervention to shine light into the deep shadows of a post-Christian world. Both perspectives are understandable, but neither fully captures the essence of the gospel’s good news.
We are called to hold a hope-filled balance. Some may shrug and say, “There’s little we can do to make the world better until Jesus returns,” and perhaps only focus on alleviating immediate suffering. But this misses a vital truth. The risen Jesus already holds all authority in heaven and on earth! The apostle Paul, often writing from prison, confidently declared that the Messiah is already reigning, having triumphed over every power. Despite facing unimaginable persecution, the early Christians did not stop proclaiming Christ’s rule. They understood that their efforts played a part in God’s ongoing plan.
At the end of his magnificent chapter on resurrection, Paul encourages us with the exhortation, “The work you’re doing is not in vain.” Every act of love carried out in the power of the Spirit will somehow be woven into God’s new creation. This truth gives us hope: what we do now matters. While the second coming will bring a glorious transformation, we are not simply waiting around. We are part of that ongoing transformation today.
People may say that working for justice is pointless, caring for the planet is futile because God will discard it one day, or striving for unity in the church or reconciliation among nations is not unachievable. In the face of these defeated mindsets, we must stand firm. Why? because Jesus has risen from the dead! His resurrection has ushered in a new world, a world full of new possibilities.
This same spirit invigorated the early Christians. Even under the crushing weight of Roman persecution, they lived generously, caring for the poor, tending to the sick, and reaching out to those outside their circle. Faced with impossible odds, they prayed and pushed forward. They were mocked, attacked, and driven out, but the work continued. New life sprang up, and people around them noticed the difference.
They knew that in Jesus, a new way of being human had begun.
The resurrection of Jesus did not just signal a personal hope for eternity—it launched a renewed way of life here and now. All that holds back justice and peace—selfishness, jealousy, rivalry, and the darkness of human sin—belongs to the old world that was defeated by the cross.
The good news is that a new world has dawned, and we are invited to be part of it.
