Multi-dimensional, purposeful living.

Wednesday 1st January 2025

When Jesus spoke the words recorded in Acts 1:8,

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth”

he was not merely giving a mission statement. He was unveiling the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, which equips us to live a life of purpose in four dimensions: reconciling our past, cultivating intimacy with God in the present, discovering a higher calling, and fully embracing the unique design God has placed in each of us.

1. Power to overcome the past

Scripture speaks of the gospel as the moment when God’s new creation breaks into the old. Through the Holy Spirit, we are no longer bound by the weight of our past. As Paul reminds us,

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

The Spirit empowers us to move forward because we are redeemed and redefined by the grace of God. We are not defined by our failures or regrets.

2. Power to experience God in the present

Empowerment is not a distant promise but a present reality. N.T. Wright emphasises that God’s Spirit dwells within us, making intimacy with God possible every moment of every day. Jesus said,

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you”

John 15:4, NIV

Through prayer, worship, and Scripture, the Holy Spirit allows us to experience the fullness of God’s love and guidance, providing strength for life’s challenges and joy in His presence.

3. Power to discover a higher purpose

Living empowered by the Spirit means aligning our lives with God’s mission. Wright highlights that the early church understood their purpose as active participants in God’s kingdom, not as mere survivors. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us,

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

The Holy Spirit equips us to serve, whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, pointing others to the hope and restoration found in Christ.

4. Power to live fully as God-designed individuals

Finally, the Spirit empowers us to be fully ourselves—the individuals God created us to be. Wright stresses that the Holy Spirit works through our unique gifts and talents, enabling us to live boldly and joyfully for God’s glory. As Paul writes,

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength”

Philippians 4:13 NIV

This empowerment is not about striving on our own but allowing God to work through us to accomplish His purposes.

Living empowered

A life with 4-dimensional purpose is not achieved by human effort but by embracing the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. This power liberates us from the past, fills our present with intimacy, fuels our discovery of purpose, and enables us to live as God’s masterpieces.

May we, as individuals and as a community, step into this empowerment, bearing witness to the transformative love and power of Jesus Christ in our lives and in the world.
