A new identity requires a new birth…
Wednesday 25th September 2024
Everything we do as Christians—our preaching, teaching, counselling, evangelism, prayers, and worship—must come from the understanding that justification has been established in our lives because we have redemption in Christ Jesus. We are not still negotiating redemption with God, hoping to win His favour someday. No, God took the initiative to redeem us. Now, it is something we discover more and more through revelation and embrace through faith.
Over the last few years, I have witnessed the rise of what I consider a wonderful practice in the church, which I will refer to as the “Come as you are” invitation to all. This means that we (the church) will embrace, without judgment, any person who wants to come to our gatherings. However, a common failing I often see in connection with that is the belief that those people should “leave as they were.”
Yes, everyone can come to Christ just as they are. The invitation is wide open to all, and no one has to get “fixed up” before coming to the Fixer. But that doesn’t mean there should be no revelation that would reposition that person’s life.
Being accepted in love is the first step. But letting people depart without helping them find fullness of life would not be aligned with Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. People who have engaged Jesus and embraced redemption should experience fundamental transformation in their lives. Jesus’ followers should all discover the mirror image of their new identity. This identity is being reflected to us through Jesus Christ. For this is what it means to be His disciples.
The basis of our new life in Christ is established in the divine exchange that took place on the cross.
For if, by the one man’s offence, death reigned through the one, many more who receive an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
(Rom. 5:17)
Just as Adam’s sin was applied to all humans,s equally, Jesus’s righteousness is offered to all humans, too. This conviction of being the righteousness of God in Christ goes beyond mere “positional righteousness.” As with all true convictions, it spills over into our practical living, which bears fruit as “practical righteousness.”
The ‘within’ always becomes the ‘without.’
This means that the internal aspects of our identity inevitably manifest in our external behaviour, relationships, and the outcomes we experience in life. As we revere who He has made us through the new birth from Above…we replicate Him in our day-to-day living! With this new nature, a new rule governs our lives.
‘He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
John 3:2-3 NIV

Alpha Course | Wednesday 9th October 2024 | 7:00pm
Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that create a safe and honest space, where people can explore the meaning of life and faith.
Connect
Connecting with others is important; friends gather around the kitchen table, meeting for coffee or catching up online. It’s no different at Alpha. All sessions start with a time to connect, relax and build friendships – whether in person or virtually.
Watch
The Alpha talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Each video talk is around thirty minutes long and explores important issues around faith and the basics of Christianity.
We address questions such as;
“Who is Jesus?”
“How can we have faith?”
“Why and how do I pray?”
“How does God guide us?”
Discuss
One of the most important parts of any Alpha Course is sharing thoughts and ideas in small groups. There’s no obligation to say anything, and there’s nothing you can’t share (seriously). It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly, and respectful environment.
Come along and enjoy a meal with others, watch an Alpha Talk video and have an open discussion in a friendly and non-judgemental environment where everyone’s opinion and experiences are validated.
