How you should pray…

How you should pray…

Friday 18th August 2023

I was reading a newspaper (a rare artifact these days that used to be one of our primary sources of information). I was struck by the sense of discouragement that hit me when I got to page 3… This sense of discouragement is stemmed from a combination of societal, cultural, and personal factors as they related to what I was exposed to in the newspaper.

While individual experiences vary, there are many causes of discouragement we share. It's important to note that these causes can interact and compound, leading to a complex experience of discouragement. Addressing these issues often involves a combination of individual introspection, societal changes, community support, and mental health resources.

I am always struck by the clear opposition prayer is to discouragement according to Jesus himself:

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

Luke 18:1 NIV

In times of discouragement and challenges, we find solace and strength in the power of prayer. Let us take comfort in the words of the Apostle Paul, who reminds us in Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV):

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Our Heavenly Father invites us to bring our burdens, worries, and fears to Him in prayer. As we lift our hearts to Him, we experience a peace that surpasses human understanding — a peace that guards our hearts and minds, even in the midst of trials.

Moreover, in 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV), we are encouraged with these words:

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

Our God is not distant; He cares deeply for each one of us. When we pour out our concerns before Him, we are reminded of His unfailing love and His promise to carry our burdens. Prayer allows us to relinquish our worries and receive the comfort that comes from knowing we are in His caring hands.

In times of discouragement, the Psalms provide us with a rich source of inspiration. Psalm 34:17-18 (NIV) declares:

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Our cries do not go unheard. Our God is near to the broken hearted, ready to deliver and restore us. Prayer enables us to draw near to the heart of God, where we find the strength to overcome our challenges. I am always struck on the clear opposition prayer is to discouragement according to Jesus himself:

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

Luke 18:1 NIV

There is no clearer pattern for prayer than the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6:9-14. Over the next couple of weeks we will dive deeply into the specifics of this as we as leadership trust that all of our people will discover a deeper more fulfilling prayer life!

Join us as we delve deep into the Lord's Prayer, unpacking its layers of meaning, and discovering the incredible riches it has to offer. Over the course of this enlightening sermon series, we will explore each line of this sacred prayer, unpacking its significance, and uncovering the transformative truths it contains.

Help us to grow in our reverence and worship of you, and may your name always be kept holy.

May your rule and reign transform us by the power of the gospel, and may we your church extend the rule and reign of Jesus Christ to every place.

May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Lord give us today our earthly and spiritual needs, and increase our hunger and thirst for more of your presence.

As we receive grace and forgiveness from you, may the same grace and forgiveness flow out from us for others.

Men’s Event – God’s Squad | Sunday 8th October

Are you ready to have an unforgettable night with other like-minded men? Then mark your calendars for the upcoming men’s event that we’re hosting! This event is designed to provide a fun and engaging atmosphere for men to connect, share stories, and make new friends. There will be plenty of time to catch up over a BBQ and we’ve also lined up an amazing speaker who will share about the God’s Squad history and vision.

If you have not heard about the God’s Squad Christian Motorcycle Club (GSCMC), it was founded in 1971. In 1972 God’s Squad began in Melbourne under the leadership of John Smith. God’s Squad spread from Australia where it has had multiple chapters throughout Europe into New Zealand, and also the USA. God’s Squad has continued for over five decades to devote its efforts to those on the fringes of society.

The Club continues to primarily exist to minister among motorcycle clubs and associated groups, where it is an accepted and relevant expression of the Christian Church. God’s Squad has also maintained a long commitment to supporting the poor, advocating for the rights of first nation people, and active ministry in prisons, schools, and the public space. All of this is built on a foundation that takes the call of radical discipleship in Christ seriously, which finds its roots in His teaching.

So, why wait? Gather your buddies and join us at our men’s event where you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. We can’t wait to see you there!
