Representing the King and His Kingdom in a dark world

Wednesday 17th January 2024

Colossians 1:13 beautifully encapsulates the transformative shift believers experience:

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.

This verse echoes a profound change—from darkness to light, from captivity to freedom—within Christ's Kingdom.

Seeking Christ's Kingdom daily reflects our commitment to embody its values practically. Love, hope, helpfulness, and humility emerge as pillars that accurately represent the essence of this Kingdom in our lives.

Love, a foundational principle, manifests in acts of kindness and compassion. For instance, taking time to listen and empathise with a friend in distress or supporting someone going through a difficult time reflects the love characteristic of Christ's Kingdom. Such actions, rooted in genuine care and concern, illuminate the darkness of despair with the light of love and understanding.

Hope, an integral part of Christ's Kingdom, inspires resilience in challenging times. Maintaining a hopeful outlook and encouraging others to see beyond their struggles exemplifies the spirit of hope when facing adversity. We have hope as an anchor because our King has overcome all things – even death – and we can live in His Kingdom power. For instance, supporting a colleague through a setback or offering words of encouragement in the face of uncertainty embodies the hopeful nature of Christ's Kingdom.

Helpfulness, another value, signifies selflessness and service towards others. Small acts like volunteering at a local school or assisting an elderly neighbour with household chores demonstrate the Kingdom's principle of helpfulness. These gestures, driven by a desire to alleviate someone's burden, bring light into their lives, dispelling the darkness of hardship.

Humility, a key trait of our King, shapes our interactions and attitudes. We draw our sense of humility from our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Humility means acknowledging our limitations and treating others with respect and dignity. In moments of success, attributing credit to the team or accepting constructive criticism gracefully reflects the humility characteristic of Christ's Kingdom.

In summary, Colossians 1:13 inspires us to embody the values of love, hope, helpfulness, and humility in our daily lives. When lived out authentically, these virtues become tangible expressions of Christ's Kingdom, infusing light into the darkness of the world around us.

What is Alpha? Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that create a safe and honest space, where people can explore life, faith and meaning. Enjoy a meal with others, watch a video, and have an open discussion and conversation in a friendly and non-judgemental environment.

Connect
Connecting with others is important; friends gathered around the kitchen table, meeting for coffee or catching up online. It’s no different at Alpha.  All sessions start with a time to connect, relax and build friendships – whether in person or virtually.

Watch
The Alpha talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Each video talk is around thirty minutes long and explores important issues around faith and the basics of Christianity. We address questions such as “Who is Jesus?" and “How can we have faith?" to “Why and how do I pray?" and “How does God guide us?"

Discuss
One of the most important parts of any Alpha Course is sharing thoughts and ideas in small groups. There’s no obligation to say anything, and there’s nothing you can’t share (seriously). It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly, and open environment.
