When God likens himself to a mother

Wednesday 8th May 2024

‘For this is what the Lord says: “I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” When you see this, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like grass; the hand of the Lord will be made known to his servants, but his fury will be shown to his foes. ‘

Isaiah 66:12-14 NIV

Motherhood is a timeless institution that is significant in shaping individuals, communities, and societies. Rooted in biology, enriched by love, and celebrated across cultures, the value of motherhood transcends mere reproduction to encompass nurturing, guidance, and the cultivation of humanity’s future. Drawing upon research, biblical references, and sociological trends, it becomes evident that motherhood constitutes a cornerstone of our world, fostering resilience, compassion, and interconnectedness.

The research underscores the indispensable role of mothers in child development. Studies consistently demonstrate the profound impact of maternal care on children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. From fostering secure attachment to instilling values and nurturing resilience, mothers lay the foundation for their children’s lifelong well-being and success. Moreover, research highlights the enduring influence of maternal warmth and support on mental health outcomes, underscoring the irreplaceable role of mothers in promoting emotional resilience and psychological flourishing.

Sociological trends further underscore the centrality of motherhood in shaping social cohesion and continuity. Despite evolving family structures and changing gender roles, mothers remain primary caregivers and nurturers in most societies. Moreover, the increasing recognition of unpaid caregiving as essential labour highlights maternal work’s economic and social value. Furthermore, the rise of movements advocating for maternal rights and support reflect a growing acknowledgment of the need to prioritise mothers’ well-being and empowerment within broader societal frameworks.

Biblical narratives offer timeless insights into the sacredness of motherhood. From the nurturing love of Mary, the mother of Jesus, to the wisdom of the Proverbs 31 woman, scripture extols the virtues of maternal care, sacrifice, and strength. Indeed, biblical teachings emphasise the divine mandate to honour and cherish mothers, recognising their pivotal role in embodying God’s love and fostering spiritual growth within families and communities. When did you last give a heartfelt “thank you” for all these benefits? Some of us will miss our mothers this coming Sunday, and for those of you who do, we pray for you: May the Holy Spirit bring remembrance of what your mum attributed to your life, and may He comfort you in her absence!

How can we celebrate the value of our mothers this Mother’s Day? It’s worth putting some extra effort and love into it!

Hey, Youth and Young Adults! Our next Y&Y service is on the 19th of May!!! Our special guest speaker is Ernie Laskaris who will share what’s on his heart regarding the YA space. Make sure you are there and bring your friends!

Ernie Laskaris is the pastor of Strong Tower Church, a small church in Balwyn composed mostly of young adults. He is at the tail end of his doctoral studies, having spent the past four years doing a philosophical study on meme culture (in the hope of being conferred the title “doctor of memes”). This is just a side quest, though, as Ernie is set to become either a full-time minister of the gospel or a future WWE Champion—whatever the Lord wills.

Be sure to join us in food and fellowship after the service. SEE YOU THERE!
