The past week we have been exposed to the unrest in people’s hearts when protests turned into violence…right here in magnificent Melbourne. It seems even one of the most livable cities in the world can have some serious problems! Who would have thought that it would come to this?

Humans consistently strive for better living circumstances. When we experience reality moving in the opposite way of our ideals it can lead to fear and even anxiety. We hate seeing our dreams turn into dust and that is where we easily step out in reactive behavior that leads to even greater tension. The question remains:

It reminds me of the instance where two of Jesus’ closest disciples tried to position themselves at the top of the perceived hierarchy they believed He was setting up:

‘Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” ‘

Mark 10:35-37 NIV

Jesus’ response was such a challenge for the “me-at-the-top” mindset:

‘Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” ‘

Mark 10:35-37,43-45 NIV

Jesus introduces a different way to arrive at the top: strive to be a servant! What a challenge for the mindset of our day. It prompts us to see ourselves in Him and in His way of doing things. This is where we find rest: In Christ…we serve! This is confirmed in the book of Acts which is the book in the Bible that demonstrates the way of life in the early church. This rest in Christ and servanthood like Christ will turn our world upside down. This is God’s way of being a light in a dark world. This is God’s way of achieving a significant and successful life. Are you resting in Christ? Are you serving like Christ? He knows how to take care of you!
