Christian Engagement in the Referendum

Christian Engagement in the Referendum

Friday 8th September 2023

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Matt 6:10 NIV

We find ourselves in a season of change, a time when our voices and actions can have a profound impact on the world around us. As followers of Christ, we are called to be active participants in shaping our society and promoting the values of love, justice, and compassion.

Recently, our community has been presented with an opportunity to engage in a referendum that will have a significant impact on our local, regional, or national context. Race relations will always be part of God’s expression of his Kingdom as the Kingdom of God is a higher priority for us as Christians than our respective ancestrally endowed cultures. As we contemplate how to participate in this process, let us turn to the words of our Lord's prayer: “Let thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

These words remind us of our responsibility to seek God's guidance and wisdom in all matters as we are called to usher in His presence in every place, including those of governance and policy-making. Here are some principles we can draw from this prayer as we engage in the referendum:

  1. Seeking God's Will: Before making any decisions, let us fervently seek God's guidance through prayer and reflection. Let our actions be aligned with His will for the betterment of our community and the world.
  2. Promoting Justice: In advocating for our stance on the referendum, let us consider the principles of justice, fairness, and equality. Are our choices in line with the values of God's kingdom, where all are treated with dignity and respect?
  3. Fostering Unity: Remember that as followers of Christ, we are called to be peacemakers and unifiers. Engage in respectful dialogue with others who may have different perspectives, seeking common ground where possible.
  4. Compassion and Care: Keep in mind the well-being of all members of our community, particularly those who may be vulnerable or marginalized. Our decisions should reflect the compassion that Christ demonstrated throughout His ministry.
  5. Civic Responsibility: As citizens, it is our duty to participate in the democratic process. Encourage one another to register to vote, research the issues, and make informed decisions that align with our values.
  6. Prayerful Action: Combine your prayers with tangible actions. Whether it's volunteering, advocating for change, or supporting initiatives that reflect God's values, let your faith inspire meaningful engagement.
  7. Remember the Bigger Picture: While the referendum is important, it is just one part of the broader journey toward God's kingdom on Earth. Our ultimate goal is to align our lives with God's will in all aspects.

In the coming weeks and months, let us engage in thoughtful discussions within our community, seeking a shared understanding of how our faith calls us to act in the referendum. Remember that our unity as a faith community can be a powerful witness to the world.

Above all, let us hold fast to the prayer,

“Let thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

Through our actions, may we be instruments of the transformative power of the gospel in the world.

Men’s Event – God’s Squad | Sunday 8th October

Are you ready to have an unforgettable night with other like-minded men? Then mark your calendars for the upcoming men’s event that we’re hosting! This event is designed to provide a fun and engaging atmosphere for men to connect, share stories, and make new friends. There will be plenty of time to catch up over a BBQ and we’ve also lined up an amazing speaker who will share about the God’s Squad history and vision.

If you have not heard about the God’s Squad Christian Motorcycle Club (GSCMC), it was founded in 1971. In 1972 God’s Squad began in Melbourne under the leadership of John Smith. God’s Squad spread from Australia where it has had multiple chapters throughout Europe into New Zealand, and also the USA. God’s Squad has continued for over five decades to devote its efforts to those on the fringes of society.

The Club continues to primarily exist to minister among motorcycle clubs and associated groups, where it is an accepted and relevant expression of the Christian Church. God’s Squad has also maintained a long commitment to supporting the poor, advocating for the rights of first nation people, and active ministry in prisons, schools, and the public space. All of this is built on a foundation that takes the call of radical discipleship in Christ seriously, which finds its roots in His teaching.

So, why wait? Gather your buddies and join us at our men’s event where you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. We can’t wait to see you there!
