Irresistible news…

Friday 14th April 2023

In 2011, Olive Tree Media released the Australian Communities Report, carried out by McCrindle Research, to inform the series Towards Belief. While the research was originally completed for the series, it has become a very significant resource for a number of ministries in understanding what the Australian community thinks of Christianity and the Church.

At the end of 2016, several ministry leaders approached Olive Tree Media and McCrindle Research with the desire for this research to be repeated to provide an updated perspective.

This new research, Faith and Belief in Australia: A national study on religion, spirituality, and worldview trends, is now completed and has generously been made publically available.

Interesting facts came out of this like the way Christians are perceived. 92% of all Australians knew at least one Christian. They viewed Christians in the following ways:

  • Caring – 41%
  • Loving – 35%
  • Kind – 35%
  • Honest – 32%
  • Faithful – 31%
  • Traditional – 25%
  • Judgmental – 20%
  • Old-fashioned – 18%
  • Hypocritical – 17%

The best ways to make Christianity attractive again – according to the research are the following:

  • Living out a genuine faith
  • Experiencing a personal event/trauma
  • Testimonies of people who have changed because of their faith

The biggest detractors to Christianity were

  • Philosophical debates and discussions
  • Miraculous stories
  • Hearing from public figures and celebrities who propose their faith on a public platform

The Gospel that transforms the lives of individuals and communities is still God’s plan for man. That has not changed! The avenue by which the Gospel is made attractive again in our society should however be revisited. Our lives as a creative community living a genuine faith – not just nominally but practically is a message that will go way further than anything else. This Sunday we will rediscover how it was done by the church in the season straight after Jesus Christ rose from the dead!

They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Acts 2:46-47 NIV
