The Church’s Calling to Serve Its Community

The Church's Calling to Serve Its Community

Wednesday 8th November 2023

The essence of Christianity lies not only in personal salvation but also in the call to serve others and make a positive impact on the community. Throughout the Bible we find numerous references that highlight the Church's responsibility to serve its community, echoing Christ's teachings and actions.

One of the most prominent passages that emphasises the Church’s role in serving the community is found in the book of Matthew. In Matthew 25:35-36 (NIV), Jesus says,

“For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger, and you invited me in, I needed clothes, and you clothed me, I was sick, and you looked after me, I was in prison, and you came to visit me."

This passage underscores the importance of feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and visiting the sick and imprisoned; showing that our faith is not just about beliefs but about action.

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, highlights the importance of serving one another in love. Galatians 5:13 (NIV) states,

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."

Here, we are reminded that the Church is called to serve its community with humility and love, using its freedom not for self-indulgence but for the betterment of others.

In the book of James, we are encouraged to put our faith into action. James 2:14-17 (NIV) states,

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

This passage underscores the importance of aligning our faith with our deeds and actively serving those in need.

We are busy preparing for two important events at BCOC to reach out and serve our city in this way.

  • Bringing Christmas To Life is where we create a hospitality event for our families served by the food pantry. If you would like to volunteer at BCTL do not hesitate to contact Pastor Michael.
  • Christmas Production. On the 3rd of December, we will be having a Christmas Production directed by Monya van Staden. This is a wonderful opportunity to invite friends who have an openness to attending church. It will be enjoyable and facilitate easy connection as we celebrate the truth behind Christmas. For this Sunday, we will have double services again at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

In conclusion, the Church is undeniably called to serve its city, guided by the teachings of Jesus, Paul, James, and various other biblical passages. The essence of Christian faith is not just personal salvation but also selfless service to others, reflecting God’s love and grace in tangible ways. By following these teachings and actively engaging in service, the Church fulfils its divine calling and positively impacts the communities it serves.
